Incident Response

Knowing what to do
What happens in your company when something goes wrong with the computers? Does everyone run around like little ants, each not knowing what policies and procedures to follow? Or does your company have a well-trained Incident Response Team following a thorough and well-rehearsed Incident Response Plan?

Plan for the future
From the biggest disasters to the tiniest nuisances, problems rarely ever call ahead to check your schedule. Most times companies are caught unawares and unprepared. Bring in heads of your various departments to collaborate on a plan of action should an intrusion take place. Form an Incident Response Team trained to handle intrusion events. Make sure you create thorough documentation!

Inform others
Make sure your employees are aware of the procedures- what to watch for, how to follow escalation, who to notify, etc. Many wonderfully-written plans fall apart when employees are unaware of procedures and either ignore a threat or notify the wrong person to handle it.

Practice makes perfect
Make time to practice what you've written. Using the procedures will teach others better than just hoping they glance through the manual. Keep up a regular schedule of practices, even once every year, like fire drills. Practice will reinforce good habits in spotting threats and allow your Response Team to review current procedures and make updates if needed.
