Personal Use & Gain
Surfing- a crime?!
Could selling an item on ebay be considered criminal? It might be if you set up a Personal Use Policy for your company.
Fiddling away a few minutes playing online might seem like a small deal, but not when you do the math. Say that an employee
spends 30mins a day playing on an auction site. That's 2.5 hours a week at, say, $12/hr pay. The company has just lost
$30 for that week. Not bad, right? That's just one employee. Try adding up hours, weeks, and months for an office
building of over 100 people and you're talking about losing serious money.
Document, document, document
If you're worried about employees using company resources for personal gain while you're paying them to be at work,
write up a Personal Use Policy for everyone to sign and acknowledge. Once the policy is in place, you'll have recourse
when it comes to disciplinary actions for infractions. Such a policy should cover the company's views on what would be
considered 'personal use'. It should be specific enough to prohibit unwanted actions, while still being ambiguous enough
for broad coverage. Something like: Game sites, such as yahoo, should not be visited while on the clock. It's broad, but
still gives a specific example for employees to judge by.
